Apprehensive about Counselling?

When I introduce myself as a Mental Health Counsellor, I often hear the same questions from those who are apprehensive about, or resistant, to counselling.
Here are some common concerns and my thoughts on them...
“What if I don’t know what to say?”
That's completely okay! Many people feel unsure about where to start. You don’t have to come in with a specific agenda. We can begin with whatever is on your mind, even if it feels small. You can share how your day was, what’s been bothering you, or even just how you’re feeling in that moment. My role is to guide the conversation and help you explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. There’s no right or wrong way to express yourself in counselling!
“What if I don’t feel comfortable with my Counsellor?”
Finding a good counsellor is a lot like finding a good partner—it’s all about connection. If something doesn’t feel right, just let me know. We can chat about it and try another approach. Remember, it’s perfectly fine to explore other counsellors too. Your comfort is crucial in the counselling process and I encourage you to prioritize your comfort and well-being.
“What if it doesn’t work?”
Oh, but what if it does?
Many folks find counselling really helpful! Research shows it can make a big difference in your mental health and well-being. The key is the connection between you and your counsellor, plus your willingness to dive into the process. It’s all about working together to help you feel your best!
“What if it makes me look weak?”
Seeking help is actually a sign of strength, not weakness. It takes courage to reach out and work on yourself. Many people go through tough times, and talking to someone is a brave step towards feeling better. Your well-being is what matters most, and those who truly care about you will support your journey!
Don’t let those concerns hold you back! If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need someone to chat with, I encourage you to reach out. No commitment, no pressure. You deserve support, and that first step could lead to something truly wonderful!
